Getting Back to Nature Part II: Camping

June is a distant memory now, but our computer was behaving very poorly for a while so I was unable to post. After the last day of school (which was at the very end of June--it still seems wrong to me) we joined several families at Baker Camp on Lake Sebago in Harriman State Park. We'd been once before the summer I was pregnant with Lucinda and I was so glad we could work it out again. It was the ideal way to kick off the summer!

Baker Camp is nestled into a beautiful state park about an hour outside of New York City. It has lovely small cabins with cots that seem to date from the mid 1940s. If you bring an air mattress and put it on top of two cots pushed together, they're fairly comfortable. There's a small beach on the lake where you can swim and they rent out boats. The lake is huge and is shared by other cabin camps in the park.

We end up not seeing much of Deston as he's busy running around with his friends. It's hard to explain just how relaxing it is to be there. There's not much to do beyond cooking outdoors, enjoying the view, visiting with friends, swimming, and exploring the grounds. Quite a few of the cabins around us were occupied, but it didn't feel crowded. Lucinda enjoyed swimming most of all and wore herself out, much to our delight.

We probably won't make it back again this summer, but I'm already looking forward to next year's trip.

Deston went too fast on the old fashioned merry-go-round
and had to lie down. Lucinda was there to comfort him.

Friends!

Guys cooking.

Friends!
