Getting Back to Nature: Part I, Hiking

The Langs used the month of June to get back to Nature! The New York State tourism agency has an ad campaign running on the subways featuring all the great stuff to do outside the city. They've highlighted the skiing, apple picking, and hiking, among other activities. They implore us to "Get Outta Town." Being the Nature enthusiasts that we are, we didn't really need an ad to convince us to get the leave the concrete jungle behind us for an afternoon, but it was a good reminder.

In the course of my research on local state parks, I found the ideal hiking location in Fahnestock State Park. It's about an hour and half north of the city (depending on traffic) and has a number of hiking trails. We chose one that was about a mile and a half and circles a large pond. It was just the right length. We had a leisurely hike, noticing all the gorgeous flora and fauna surrounding us. Deston noticed that the island of logs in the middle of the pond looked like a beaver dam and by George, we think he was correct. When we started discussing it, we noticed lots of the tree stumps around were not cut bluntly, but were hewn with pointy tops. The work of strong beaver teeth and not axes. Lucinda was mostly content to stay in the Ergo on my back, but enjoyed the times when we allowed her to walk around. She was off like a rocket as soon as I put her down--she wanted to climb around just like Deston was.

It makes my heart feel good to see Deston scamper through the woods. We talked about how much time Andrew spent in the woods when he was young, and Deston said when he's a papa he'll take his kids to the woods too.
