I think Small Business Saturday is a brilliant addition to the shopping frenzy that begins with Black Friday and ends with Cyber Monday. Though it was created by American Express, small businesses have really made it their own thing. The independent bookstore community in particular has strongly embraced Small Business Saturday and it fits in with their adoption of the "Shop Local" movement. This year Sherman Alexie took Small Business Saturday to a new level with Indies First. He and other authors went to their local bookstores to handsell books to customers. Alexie himself went to four bookstores in the Seattle area. The man's an Indie Bookstore Superhero.
We didn't make it to a local bookstore yesterday (in fact, Deston used a birthday gift card at Barnes & Noble), but we did go to a great toy store, Neergard's, to do some Christmas shopping. We're lucky to live in a neighborhood that's full of small businesses and close to other neighborhoods full of independent bookstores.
I hope everyone will keep small businesses on their radar for holiday shopping and beyond. It's truly an investment in your community.
